SOUTH DAKOTA
Currently there is no data collection in South Dakota. South Dakota House Bill 1292, if enacted, would require all law enforcement agencies statewide to collect data and would establish guidelines for the collection and analysis of the data. The legislature has also passed a bill that encourages local agencies to purchase video cameras in order to reduce racial profiling.

Scope of Collection: vehicle stops
Data Collected: age, race, gender, ethnicity, number of passengers, reason for stop / alleged violation, warning given, citation given, personal search conducted, search of vehicle conducted, contraband found
Other Information: Mandates the collection of data by all law enforcement officers in the state. The Division of Criminal Investigation would be responsible for the creation of forms for the data collection. One of the major concerns within the state is the treatment of American Indians, including during traffic stops.
